I’ll just forward the link. It’s a complete program of 6 weeks designed by Madonna’s trainer Tracy Anderson. I guess there’s nothing revolutionary to this method, basically just eat “nothing” and work out like a maniac. I’m sure it works, though.

Eight Glasses of Water Beneficial or Not?

Posted by Johanna on 5th, 2008

Basically all diets tell you that you should drink lots of water (does ‘eight glasses of water’ sound familiar?). But apparently there isn’t enough research to support this idea – in fact, a review of studies has found NO evidence that drinking this specific amount of water is beneficial for a healthy person.

“Numerous claims have been made about water — that it prevents headaches, removes dangerous “poisons,” improves the function of various organs and is associated with reduced risk for various diseases. But none of these is supported by scientific evidence. The authors were not even able to find a study leading to the “eight glasses a day” rule, whose origin remains unknown.”

However, some studies have found that drinking extra water helps the kidneys clear sodium (retention of sodium might increase the risk of hypertension), but nothing has been clinically established.

There is evidence that “water might help decrease appetite and control weight gain”.

I guess the bottom line is that if you’re a healthy person (not in need of weight loss), you have no gain in drinking extra water (unless you need it for hydration, say, in a hot climate). Even though the water in itself won’t provide any benefits I think it’s a good way to keep off that appetite and stay healthily full.

Lose Weight (or Keep it Off) at the Office

Posted by Johanna on 4th, 2008

I am very aware of the risk of gaining weight (or not being able to shed it) while sitting at a desk all day long. Luckily, I can ride my bike to work every day, and I’m able to run errands using all those staircases in the building I work in. Additionally I try to stand by my desk, as much as my back can handle. I don’t really have any problems with snacking, I stick to the snack appointments I have with my office buddies and I always eat fruit at those times.

In a recent survey by careerbuilder.com, 49 percent of office workers said they had gained weight at their current jobs, and 28 percent of those had gained more than 10 pounds.

Here are 8 easy ways to lose weight at the office.

The Secret to Ashlee Simpson’s New Body

Posted by Johanna on 3rd, 2008

Over the past year, Ashlee’s seen a real change in her body. “I started working out more, which really helped me tone up,” she says. She ramped up her exercise routine with L.A. celebrity trainer Mike Alexander. With two or three one-hour sessions per week, Ashlee is achieving her goal of having a powerful yet feminine body. “Exercising makes me feel stronger and sexier,” she says. “It just makes my whole day better. I have more energy to perform, my head is clearer—which helps me write my lyrics—and I sleep better. What more can you ask for?”

The two usually work out at Ashlee’s home, where she has a treadmill, an elliptical, and dumbbells. “I love it when my arms are toned, so we use weights to target them—and we do lunges to give my small butt more shape,” she says. Alexander also devises moves that don’t require any tools but do utilize Ashlee’s surroundings. “Her backyard has about 30 to 40 steps, so I have her jog down, do lunges for the length of the pool, jog back up the stairs, then do a set of squats,” he explains. “It’s the kind of workout you can easily modify depending on where you are because hotels, office buildings, and homes usually have stairs.”

Alexander also gives us tips on a typical Ashlee workout that anyone can do at home. His high-energy plan (all you need are some steps or a bench, a pair of 5- to 7-pound weights, and a jump rope) incorporates tri-sets, three back-to-back moves that work your upper and lower body.

Don’t Have Time to Go to the Gym?

Posted by Johanna on 1st, 2008

I know this sounds cheesy, but Carmen Electra’s Fit to Strip (Disc 2 from her Fitness DVD Collection) is amazing! You can do the whole hour or just pick which muscle group to focus on if you don’t have much time. I don’t know anything about the other DVDs, but this one is all toning and no stripping.
